US Army facing major decline in white recruits: Report

A new report claims that the recent U.S. Army recruitment shortage can partially be attributed to a significant decrease in the number of white Army recruits over the past five years.
According to internal Army recruitment data obtained by Military.com, the significant decline in white Army recruits over the past five years has captured the Army’s attention since the decline comes as the Army fell roughly 10,00 recruits short of its goal in fiscal year 2023.
With a goal of 65,000 new recruits, the U.S. Army reported roughly 55,000 new recruits in 2023.
Military.com reported that the Army had 44,042 new white Army recruits in 2018. However, the number of white Army recruits has decreased each year since 2018, falling to a low of 25,070 white Army recruits in 2023. The most significant decrease in white Army recruitment was a 6% drop from 2022 to 2023.
Additionally, Military.com noted that while there have been other demographic shifts during that same time period, no other demographic has experienced such a sharp decline.
According to the recruitment data obtained by Military.com, 56.4% of new Army recruits were designated as white in 2018. By 2023, the number of new white Army recruits decreased to just 44%.
During that same period, black Army recruits increased from 20% to 24% of the recruitment pool, and Hispanic Army recruits increased from 17% to 24% of the recruitment pool.

Military.com explained that the total number of black and Hispanic Army recruits did not experience a significant increase between 2018 and 2023; however, the recruitment pool percentage increased for both demographics due to the decrease in white Army recruits.
“What we’re seeing is a reflection of society; what we know less of is what is driving all of these things,” an Army official said in a statement to Military.com. “There is no widely accepted cause.”
Army officials told Military.com that multiple factors have contributed to the recruitment issue, including an increase in obesity in the United States, heightened criticism of the military due to political issues, and a public education system that lacks critical resources in America.
Military.com noted that the Army’s recruitment shortage comes as the Army has attempted to increase its presence in Europe and the Pacific, requiring a smaller force to execute a broadening mission.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah ready for ‘unrestricted warfare’ with Israel

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said Sunday that his group is ready for “unrestricted warfare” with Israel amid an exchange of cross-border fire between the two sides, Anadolu Agency reports.
“Israel and its army and settlers are the ones who fear war, not Lebanon,” Nasrallah said in a speech, one week after senior Hezbollah commander Wissam al-Tawil was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
“We have been ready for war in the last 99 days,” Nasrallah said. “We will accept the war and will fight without a ceiling or controls if the war is imposed on us,” he added.
The Hezbollah chief said the Israeli army hides its casualties.
“When the war stops, the enemy will face a catastrophe as a result of the resistance in Gaza and other resistance fronts,” he added.
Tensions have escalated along Lebanon’s border with Israel since the Israeli army launched a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip following Hamas’ 7 October attack, amid an exchange of cross-border fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, in the deadliest clashes since the two sides had fought a full-scale war in 2006.

List of Red Sea Targets Expanded – Ansarallah Retaliates following US-UK Strikes

The retaliation by Ansarallah Al-Houthi’s Movement to recent American and British attacks on the country was quick and came in two separate operations.
The military spokesperson for the Yemeni group, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said in a statement that Yemeni forces have targeted an American ship in the Gulf of Aden.
Saree said that Ansarallah now officially considers all American and British ships in the Red Sea military targets.

The announcement is considered a major development, considering that previously, Ansarallah Houthis only targeted ships that were bound for Israeli ports, as a way of putting pressure on Israel to end its genocidal war on Gaza.
The United States and the British government, who support the Israeli war, carried out several attacks at Yemeni targets starting on January 12, resulting in the killing and wounding of Yemenis.
Washington said that their attacks, which involved air and missile strikes, were meant as a ‘message’ to the Houthis.
According to today’s reports, however, the message was not received. Earlier on Monday, the US Central Command claimed that it had downed an anti-ship missile in the Red Sea, targeting the US destroyer USS-Laboon.
The Americans say that the missile was downed by a fighter jet near the coast of Hudaydah, in western Yemen. Later, two British maritime security agencies said that a Houthi missile had hit a US- owned ship near Aden.
The US military said that they could not defend the ship, which flew a Marshall Islands flag, because it did not send a distress signal.
The escalation in the Red Sea places Washington and its allies before a serious, and possibly unprecedented, challenge. A major war on Ansarallah is unlikely to alter the group’s political outlook, especially since the group is already in a state of readiness, thus its military capabilities are not exposed to American missiles.
Additionally, the US-drafted UN Security Council Resolution 2722, in addition to the US-led Red Sea coalition Prosperity Guardian, were supposedly designed to secure the Red Sea.
But the expansion of the Houthi operations, in response to the US-UK attacks, is likely to turn the Red Sea into a war zone, complicating an already difficult situation for the global economy.
Many shipping companies have already canceled their movement through the Red Sea, others have diverted away from the Bab Al-Mandab area, and more are likely to join them in coming days.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed they were behind several explosions near the U.S. Consulate in Erbil in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Monday night they said targeted an Israeli “espionage centerm” state media reports.
The big picture: National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in an emailed statement Monday evening that U.S. officials had seen the report of the incident and “tracked the missiles, which impacted in northern Iraq and northern Syria,” and no American personnel or facilities were targeted.
What they’re saying: “We have been in touch with senior Iraqi officials as well as officials in the Kurdistan Region,” Watson said.
“Iran is claiming this is in response to the terrorist attacks in Kerman, Iran and Rask, Iran, with a focus on ISIS,” she added.
“We will continue to assess the situation, but initial indications are that this was a reckless and imprecise set of strikes. The United States supports the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Iraq.”
There was no immediate response from Israel’s government.

DUBAI/BAGHDAD, Jan 16 (Reuters) – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they attacked the “spy headquarters” [Mossad-Kj] of Israel in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, state media reported late on Monday, while the elite force said they also struck in Syria against the Islamic State.
The strikes come amid concerns about the escalation of a conflict that has spread through the Middle East since the war between Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas began on Oct. 7, with Iran’s allies also entering the fray from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
“In response to the recent atrocities of the Zionist regime, causing the killing of commanders of the Guards and the Axis of Resistance … one of the main Mossad espionage headquarters in Iraq’s Kurdistan region was destroyed with ballistic missiles,” the Guards said in a statement.
Reuters could not independently verify the report. Israeli government officials were not reachable for immediate comment.
