Baltimore Riots…Prelude to Urban War

It began as a peaceful protest over the death of Freddy Gray.
But it turned into an urban civil war.
[Clip: “We had one officer knocked out, hit in the head, he was taken to the hospital. I just checked on him he’s doing better. I had one officer on his knee cap his left kneecap severely damaged, there again in Shock-Trauma.
“Had two more officers downed injured fairly seriously. All are going to be ok, but sustained heavy damage in their bodies by flying debris, rocks, sticks, bottles, anything that these — what appeared to be high school students in our school system — did out there within the streets.
“As our officers proceeded to push them out of that area they moved down to the area of North and Pensy where them and others attacked a police car, broke out the windows, stomped on it, I think you have information on that.
“I’m very concerned that I had an officer trapped in that vehicle. The officers had removed themselves and had sheltered in place in a nearby store.
“We were able to get resources down there to push that crowd away from that area. They ended up south at Pensy and North Street and you can see they started to ransack CVS in criminal acts of vandalism and taking of property.
“We were able to assemble resources from out of town to get up there in a rapid manner. We took that corner back as we sustained Mondawmin Mall and made sure it was stable. We were able to move those resources down to Pensy from a northern direction moving southward.
“We then brought in other resources that moved from the south northward to Pensy and we took that intersection back. We started to push in a west bound direction, we saw more looting taking place…”]
Taking corners and intersections back?
It’s urban war beginning right here in Baltimore and it’s a bad omen for the future and for whites.

The blacks are already getting a free pass with the Jewish media and officials calling the looters “high school students” and “children.” As if they don’t know any better.
They do. Here’s a flyer circulated by the “children” over Twitter calling their fellow black teens to come out in droves to “purge” Baltimore.
And the black gangs…the Bloods, Crips, and Black Guerrilla Family…all came together and directed the looters away from black businesses toward those not black-owned.
And they didn’t know any better? C’mon.
“Chicago Rising” now follows on the heels of a very well-organized social media crusade by black activists.
And don’t think for a minute that cops and soldiers won’t start drilling together in prepping for urban war in every major city across America.
“Baltimore Uprising” also gives Homeland Security—still in the hands of Michael Chertoff and run by Goldman Sachs’ former exec, Jeh Johnson—a new lease on life.
For with Congressman Cummings claiming that the looters came from ‘out of town,’ he tosses the ball right smack into Homeland Security’s court.
[Clip: ” What, what triggered this violence? I mean this started out peacefully.”
“Well, I got to give it to the citizens of Baltimore. I was there all day and it was very peaceful all day, thousands of people. And then at the end there were a few people who said, we’re going to–we’re going to turn this city down, we’re going to close it down. And the next thing you know, we had a few people, mainly from out of town to come and to start beating up on police cars and throwing all kinds of projectiles.”]
Naah, once the flyers started circulating, the Baltimore black teens came out in droves like a flash mob to “purge.”
But Homeland Security will pick up the cue of the ‘out-of-towners’ that these are ‘domestic agitators’ and will target their ‘security’ agenda on ‘internal’ threats, not foreign terrorists.
The Jewish-run SPLC already has a ‘Hate Map’ of ‘internal threats’—highlighting White Christian organizations that oppose same-sex marriage— as part of Homeland Security’s monitoring apparatus.
Those targeted will be all who refuse their ‘politically correct’ agenda.
Isn’t it interesting that the White House is so nonchalant about Baltimore.
Obama and Holder were all over Ferguson but why not here?
Because Ferguson was spun as a ‘white cop’ issue.
But Baltimore—with its black mayor, black police commissioner, and largely black police force—is not a ‘white crime’ issue.

STREET EVANGELISM REPORT – Boston, April 22-25
Day 1
I arrived in Boston Wednesday late afternoon and hit the Streets of Brookline MA, a bedroom community 15 minutes from Boston proper, a predominantly JEWISH area.
Holding high the Holy Cross of Christ on a median strip in Coolege Corner, the Gentiles with their honks and their waves and their “God Bless You!” responses started immediately without let up.
It was soon interrupted by vicious, foul curses from a Jew in his 50s on the corner. His mouth was a veritable sewer of the foulest language poured forth non-stop.
I finally couldn’t take it any longer and yelled back, “See, this is what your sick religion has produced in your soul, a stinking sewer.”
That shut him up. But then MORE Jews started cursing me with the usual curses, “Your’re a self-hating Jew!” You’re an enemy of the Jewish people!” “You’re going to hell for hating Jews!” “You’re a traitor!” (“meshumed.”)
I yelled back at them, “You stupid Jews. The Messiah came, you missed Him, and your religion is bankrupt!”
Then a Jew started following me back to the place I’m staying threatening me that I better “leave town.” I turned around and made the sign of the Cross over him emphatically and he started cringing and his face went into contortions, He turned around quicky and started off in the other direction.
I said to myself, “It’s good that the Jews are cursing me out. This means I’m making an impact.”

STREET EVANGELISM REPORT – Boston, April 22-25
Days 2 & 3
My route consisted of Coolidge Corner in Jew Brookline; South Station in downtown Boston (HUGE intersection of downtown pedestrians), Mass Pike exit, Rt 128 entrance/exit, Train station.
Then I go to Harvard Square and then back to Coolidge Corner in Brookline for evening rush hour. That’s my usual route.
Tons of people came up to me at South Station (and everywhere else) saying HOW MUCH they “Love my Videos.”
One businessman was so excited to see me at the median strip outside South Station that he followed me to the Red Line train to speak with me personally of how much he thought my Street Evangelism was “TOTALLY EFFECTIVE” in reaching people.
ON DAY 3…I decided to go to a huge median strip on Boylston Street and Mass Avenue.
Photos started flicking, young students from the Berkeley School of Music started coming up to me saying that what I was doing was “awesome,” and cars started HONKING and everybody was putting their THUMBS UP nodding in total assent.
Then something very unique occurred.
I felt there was something behind me out of nowhere.
I turned around and there was an older man standing right behind me. He had a “venerable” look about him.
He said to me, “You will save everybody here by what you are doing.” He then left.
Suddenly, a bright light appeared (the sun came out) and lightened the entire area around Boylston and Mass Avenue.
All the pedestrians were smiling at me. Many started waving to me from the four corners of the intersection. I said to myself, “I feel like I’m being saved.”
What a mystical and encouraging experience!

He told me it was if each agitator was assigned his or her own designated group to monitor and escalate. He queried local after local who these people were and kept getting told they did not know them.
He stated, if you studied these people out closely, you would pick up the Jewish facial features and mannerisms combined with their mixed complexions. These were mixed marriage offspring especially picked for their ability to blend in, and it became so obvious who was controlling the show on the ground.

Nailed it, Brother! You made a great hit in Boston, just as you had in Atlanta. Hopefully, this will sweep across the nation and wake the sheeple up, as well as bring much needed funding to your Foundation’s coffers.
Indeed, it was mafia Jewish agitation that sparked the violence in Baltimore earlier this week.
I live just 20 miles south of the riot-torn areas of that city. The MD National Guard wasn’t called in until much of the damage was done and a number of police officers were seriously injured with broken bones from rocks and other debris thrown at them by gangs of thugs.
Among the buildings (and vehicles) seriously damaged/destroyed by arson fires was a Senior Center (to house 60 elderly) almost completely constructed by a Southern Baptist Church (construction took 8 years), as well as a CVS, check-cashing and some other stores.
Additionally, +BN, an MLB game between the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox was played in front of empty seats — a Major League Baseball first. This was to ensure the safety of the players themselves, as well as fans; since there was an attack on fans leaving the stadium Monday night after the game.

When your ethnic group is as powerless as the Blacks, it could seem, to a young man at any rate, like the only option is to riot.
You never see Jews rioting because they have all the power.

While the violent crowds were being encouraged by the Jews from above, I haven’t seen anyone on this site really mention the fact that many of our US police officers have actually been trained in Israel.
These crowds had to have an excuse to riot and they were given it by the police themselves. I am of the opinion that many police officers are Jews and that it was Jews or their lapdog Masons on the police force who injured this man ‘s spine so bad that the injury killed him. There is no excuse whatever to injure someone like this.
I also understand that the mayor, a woman, told the police to stand down and not do anything when these crowds were looting and destroying people’s property.

As individuals we have virtually no say so on where our tax dollars are spent, or how much of it is spent. And if they wouldn’t throw us in jail, we probably wouldn’t pay them.
I have asked my employer to stop deducting them of my check but corporate refused.

For almost 150 years the United States has been conducting an interesting experiment. The subjects of the experiment: black people and working-class whites. The hypothesis to be tested: Can a people taken from the jungles of Africa and forced into slavery be fully integrated as citizens in a majority white population?
The whites were descendants of Europeans who had created a majestic civilization. The former slaves had been tribal peoples with no written language and virtually no intellectual achievements.
Acting on a policy that was not fair to either group, the government released newly freed black people into a white society that saw them as inferiors. America has struggled with racial discord ever since. Decade after decade the problems persisted but the experimenters never gave up.
They insisted that if they could find the right formula the experiment would work, and concocted program after program to get the result they wanted.
They created the Freedman’s Bureau, passed civil rights laws, tried to build the Great Society, declared War on Poverty, ordered race preferences, built housing projects, and tried midnight basketball. Their new laws intruded into people’s lives in ways that would have been otherwise unthinkable.
They called in National Guard troops to enforce school integration. They outlawed freedom of association. Over the protests of parents, they put white children on buses and sent them to black schools and vice versa. They tried with money, special programs, relaxed standards, and endless handwringing to close the “achievement gap.”
To keep white backlash in check they began punishing public and even private statements on race. They hung up Orwellian public banners that commanded whites to “Celebrate Diversity!” and “Say No To Racism.” Nothing was off limits if it might salvage the experiment.
Some thought that what W.E.B. Du Bois called the Talented Tenth would lead the way for black people. A group of elite, educated blacks would knock down doors of opportunity and show the world what blacks were capable of. There is a Talented Tenth. They are the black Americans who have become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and scientists. But ten percent is not enough.
For the experiment to work, the ten percent has to be followed by a critical mass of people who can hold middle-class jobs and promote social stability. That is what is missing. Through the years, too many black people continue to show an inability to function and prosper in a culture unsuited to them.
Detroit is bankrupt, the south side of Chicago is a war zone, and majority-black cities all over America are beset by degeneracy and violence. And blacks never take responsibility for their failures. Instead, they lash out in anger and resentment. Across the generations and across the country, as we have seen in Detroit, Watts, Newark, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and now Ferguson, rioting and looting are just one racial incident away.
The white elite would tell us that this doesn’t mean the experiment has failed. We just have to try harder. We need more money, more time, more understanding, more programs, more opportunities. But nothing changes no matter how much money is spent, no matter how many laws are passed, no matter how many black geniuses are portrayed on TV, and no matter who is president.
Some argue it’s a problem of “culture,” as if culture creates people’s behavior instead of the other way around. Others blame “white privilege.” But since 1965, when the elites opened America’s doors to the Third World, immigrants from Asia and India–people who are not white, not rich, and not “connected”–have quietly succeeded.
While the children of these people are winning spelling bees and getting top scores on the SAT, black “youths” are committing half the country’s violent crime–crime, which includes viciously punching random white people on the street for the thrill of it, that has nothing to do with poverty.
The experiment has failed. Not because of culture, or white privilege, or racism. The fundamental problem is that white people and black people are different. They differ intellectually and temperamentally. These differences result in permanent social incompatibility.
Our rulers don’t seem to understand just how tired their white subjects are with this experiment. They don’t understand that white people aren’t out to get black people; they are just exhausted with them.
They are exhausted by the social pathologies, the violence, the endless complaints, the blind racial solidarity, the bottomless pit of grievances, the excuses, and the reflexive animosity.
The elites explain everything with “racism,” and refuse to believe that white frustration could soon reach the boiling point.

ANTIOCH was the second most mentioned city in the Acts of the Apostles and the third city of importance in the Roman Empire. It was founded by Seleucus I in 300 B.C. on the Orontes, and was named after his father Antiochus.
It was known for its splendor and beauty. After the Romans occupied it under the leadership of Pompey in 64 B.C. they competed among each other to make Antioch the “Queen of the East.”
They built temples, theatres, public baths, bridges and aqueducts. Besides its adornment, it was “notorious for the profligacy of its pagan population.”
Its location, on the river Orontes and 21 miles from the sea, made it a center of trade “being easily approached by the caravans of the East and through its port Seleucia having maritime communication with the West.”
This landmark of Syria, because of its location, size and importance in the Roman Empire, moved to be the second center of Christianity. Nicolaus, one of the seven deacons chosen to serve tables, was a proselyte from Antioch and was probably the first Christian from that city.
To Antioch, the first Christians fled the persecution which followed the death of St. Stephen, the martyr. Here the word of God was preached to Jews and Gentiles by Barnabas, a man full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles.
In Antioch, the followers of Christ were called, probably out of mockery, Christians for the first time.

Baltimore State’s Attorney General Marylin Mosby has issued charges for all six arresting officers in the Freddie Gray incident.

Officer Caesar Goodson Jr. faces 2nd degree murder and other charges. Three other officers are charges with involuntary manslaughter and other charges. One officer is charged with 2nd degree assault and false imprisonment.
Critics say the charges are racially and politically motivated.
Mosby is a Black Power activist closely tied to the NAACP and other Black advocacy groups. She is also married to the Baltimore City Council member who defended the rioters in a television interview.
SO the three Black police will get the light punishment while the rest will get punished by 2nd murder degree.

Clarifying the Constitutional thresholds for a Terry stop versus an actual arrest
There appears to be much rending of garments and gnashing of teeth over the claim that Freddie Gray’s arrest itself was unlawful, thus tainting every aspect of subsequent police conduct, thus murder!11!11!
The thinking, as near as I can understand it, is as follows:
(1) Freddie Gray did no more than merely make eye contact with police officers, and then flee. (At this point the police did not know that Gray possessed a knife, whether legal or not.)
(2) On this basis the police initiated a pursuit and stop of Gray.
(2) This police conduct fails to meet the standard of probable cause necessary for an arrest to be Constitution, making the arrest unlawful.
(4) Even if Gray’s knife is indeed unlawful it must be suppressed as evidence because it is the fruit of the tainted tree of the unlawful arrest, as the police did not know of the knife when they initiated their interaction with Gray.
(5) ????
(6) The police in custody of Gray murdered him.
Sadly, this conception of the events in this case and the conclusion drawn merely reflects a rather profound ignorance of what the Constitution permits in terms of police interaction with the public.
The simple truth is that under the facts as known in this case the police had more than sufficient grounds on which to arrest Freddie Gray.
(Whether the police used excessive force in making that arrest or murdered Gray in the van are, of course, separate issues, which we’ve already touched upon in detail here: What do we REALLY know about why Freddie Gray died?)
As is our practice in our posts here at Legal Insurrection, then, let’s take a step back from the narrative of the mob and the activists and media (but I repeat myself) responsible for their care and feeding, and look to the actual law.
Meet Terry v. Ohio
While there have been numerous Supreme Court decisions touching upon one or another of the Constitutional issues raised when police interact with the public, the touchstone in the modern era is Terry v. Ohio, 392 U.S. 1 (US Supreme Court 1968).
In Terry the Supreme Court distinguished various degrees of interaction between the police and the public, and established the legal criteria that scoped whether those interactions were Constitutional.
Distinguishing an Arrest from a Stop
The least degree of interaction, of course, is a police officer merely observing someone in public. This raises no Constitutional issues, and is entirely lawful.
On the other extreme, the greatest degree of interaction between police and public, for purposes of this discussion, is the arrest.
Simply put, an arrest occurs when the police have seized custody of your person and you are placed under their physical control pending further processing in the criminal justice pipeline.
It is often the case, however, that the initial interaction between an officer and a member of the public is not a full-out arrest, but a less intensive stop.
During a stop the officer might question the suspect and try to develop further information about the circumstances that led to the stop.
It is in the context of such a stop that Terry makes its mark, and to this day police stops of the nature under discussion are referred to as “Terry stops.”
Bottom line: An arrest and a stop are distinct types of interactions between police and the public.
Distinguishing Probable Cause from Reasonable Suspicion
In order for an arrest to be lawful the arresting officer must have probable cause to believe that the suspect has committed a crime.
Probable cause in this context means that the officer must have a reasonable (meaning, the application of reason to observed evidence) and articulable basis for this belief.
Probable cause is not, however, required in order to make a mere stop. The legal requirement for a stop is the lower threshold of reasonable suspicion.
So, what is reasonable suspicion?
Interestingly, Terry itself uses the phrase reasonable suspicion only once, and not in the context of providing a definition.
This, however, is the conduct of Terry and his cohorts which the Court found was sufficient to raise a reasonable suspicion in the officer who initiated the stop:
Officer McFadden testified that, while he was patrolling in plain clothes in downtown Cleveland at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon of October 31, 1963, his attention was attracted by two men, Chilton and Terry, standing on the corner of Huron Road and Euclid Avenue.
He had never seen the two men before, and he was unable to say precisely what first drew his eye to them. However, he testified that he had been a policeman for 39 years and a detective for 35, and that he had been assigned to patrol this vicinity of downtown Cleveland for shoplifters and pickpockets for 30 years.
He explained that he had developed routine habits of observation over the years, and that he would “stand and watch people or walk and watch people at many intervals of the day.” He added: “Now, in this case, when I looked over, they didn’t look right to me at the time.”
His interest aroused, Officer McFadden took up a post of observation in the entrance to a store 300 to 400 feet away from the two men. “I get more purpose to watch them when I seen their movements,” he testified.
He saw one of the men leave the other one and walk southwest on Huron Road, past some stores. The man paused for a moment and looked in a store window, then walked on a short distance, turned around and walked back toward the corner, pausing once again to look in the same store window.
He rejoined his companion at the corner, and the two conferred briefly.
Then the second man went through the same series of motions, strolling down Huron Road, looking in the same window, walking on a short distance, turning back, peering in the store window again, and returning to confer with the first man at the corner.
The two men repeated this ritual alternately between five and six times apiece — in all, roughly a dozen trips. At one point, while the two were standing together on the corner, a third man approached them and engaged them briefly in conversation.
This man then left the two others and walked west on Euclid Avenue. Chilton and Terry resumed their measured pacing, peering, and conferring.
After this had gone on for 10 to 12 minutes, the two men walked off together, heading west on Euclid Avenue, following the path taken earlier by the third man.
By this time, Officer McFadden had become thoroughly suspicious.
As can be seen, no explicitly unlawful behavior is required to raise a reasonable suspicion–merely suspicious behavior is sufficient.
(Given the importance of Terry in American jurisprudence, I do of course urge you to read the whole thing.)
Applying Terry to the Freddie Gray Experience
How does this compare to the police interactions with Freddie Gray in the case du jour?
Freddie Gray had an extensive criminal record, and this was well known to police officers in the community.
He was, in short, known to engage in unlawful criminal activity with a frequency that would in any other context be considered evidence of a notable work ethic.
He had at least 18 arrests in the ~8 years between 2007 and his death in 2015–and it is worth keeping in mind that the only reason his arrest record here begins in only in 2007 is that prior arrests would be sealed as juvenile records.
It is also notable that although Gray’s early arrests were apparently confined to drug offenses, in later years he began to be charged with acts of violence, including several charges on differing dates of second-degree assault, as well as burglary.
In addition, the neighborhood where the arrest occurred is known more generally for being a high-crime area, and so the police would be expected to be particularly attuned for indications of criminal conduct.
In this context the police observe well-known criminal Gray acting in a manner that they perceive as noteworthy.
The police begin to approach Gray, a form of police conduct that requires no particular legal justification at least until an actual interaction has begun.
Observing the police approach, Gray substantially increases the suspiciousness of his conduct by fleeing the officers.
At this point the Constitutional grounds for a Terry stop have clearly been met.
Again, not adequate grounds for an actual arrest, but adequate grounds for a mere stop.
Suspicion Leads to Stop, Stop Leads to Frisk
One important facet of a Terry stop is that it allows the police to conduct a surface frisk of the suspect for purposes of safety.
This is a far more limited search than is permitted during a full-on arrest. During an arrest, the police may thoroughly search through your pockets, for example, for any items that might prove to be contraband, or even to simply document your possessions at the time of arrest.
In the cast of a Terry stop, however, the police are limited to a superficial pat down or frisk of the suspect’s outer body to ensure that they do not apparently possess weapons capable of endangering the officers or the public.
That said, if the pat down or frisk discloses the identifiable presence of a weapon in a pocket, for example, then that weapon may be secured to ensure the safety of the scene.
The securing of such an item is perfectly lawful, and if the item turns out to be contraband it is perfectly appropriate as the basis for the probable cause necessary to make an actual arrest.
Let’s Review: Freddie Gray’s Stop, Frisk, and Arrest
In the context of Freddie Gray, we’ve already seen that the Constitutional basis for a Terry stop was present.
Upon making the Terry stop, the police report that they frisked Gray, and felt the presence of a folding knife in his pocket.
Upon securing the pocket knife, they observed that it was of a type unlawful to possess in Baltimore, and thus contraband.

STREET EVANGELISM REPORT
Day 1, NYC, April 30
At Times Sq On 45th and Broadway median strip I held high the Holy Cross.
MANY of the bus drivers know me by now and honked and put their thumbs up.
MANY pedestrians came up to me saying they “love my Videos.”
One very interesting thing occurred with a Hasidic Jew in his late twenties.
Now while all Hasidic Jews turn their eyes away from the Cross, and some even cover their eyes, not this one.
He first looked at me with his expression inaudibly saying, “There’s power here and this is a Jew expressing this power.” (All Jews easily recognize other racial Jews.)
He stood transfixed for 30 seconds then looking at me straight in the eyes, (and I in return), started taking pictures of me holding high, (with power), the Holy Cross.
The power of the Cross impressed this young Hasid. Hopefully a seed was planted and will grow into him confessing Christ.

Apparently Thomas the disciple of Jesus had also gone to south India in his lifetime and started a Christian community there which exists to this very day called Mar Thoma and another prominent ancient Church there is the Syrian Orthodox Church. Day 2, Wall Street, May 1
As soon as I got to the edge of Wall Street at Broad and South, a huge clanging noise shattered the lower air.
Everyone was looking up to see what the noise was all about.
Then a HUGE military transport plane appeared, I mean HUGE, which was hovering close to the water. People were exclaiming, “What in the world is this?!”
I was the only one who knew: THIS is to prepare you for the look AND reality of martial law.
Then at the center of Wall Street with my Holy Cross, my sign, “Occupy Wall Street With Jesus Christ,” and a big smile, I was surrounded by 5 businessmen from India who asked me if I was with the Russian Orthodox Church.
When I said I was they broke out into hugs and thanking me and asking me to bless their new mining enterprise in Central Russia of which they were in Wall Street to list on the NYSE.
Then other businessmen kept coming up to me thanking me for my sign and what I was doing on Wall Street.
This was really the FIRST time I got SO MUCH affirmation from businessmen (Gentiles, not Jews), on Wall Street!

Forgive me for taking so long to reply concerning the conversion of Ethiopia to Christianity. I’m working on answers for your other questions. You wrote:

Reply: The the young slave brothers you have in mind are St. Frumentios [Frumentius] and his brother Edesios [Edesius]. They are a large part of the wonderful story of the baptism of the Kingdom of Ethiopia (Abbysinia, or Axumite Kingdom].
According to traditional sources, paganism as well as Judaism were practiced side by side in Ethiopia before the introduction of Christianity. Christianity was introduced into Ethiopia just a few years after the Resurrection of Christ.
Although Christianity became the official religion of the Aksumite kingdom in the fourth century, the religion had been known in Ethiopia since a much earlier time.
In the Acts of the Apostles, 8:26-40, we are told of a certain Eunuch, the treasurer of the Kandake (Candace – “Queen” or “Queen Mother”) of Ethiopia, who went to Jerusalem to worship the God of Israel.
While on the way, he met Apostle Philip the Deacon of the Seventy (not the same as Phillip, one of the chief Twelve Apostles) and was baptized by him at Gaza. Ethiopian tradition asserts that the Eunuch returned home and evangelized the people.
In his Homily on Pentecost, St. John Chrysostom mentions that the Ethiopians were present in the Holy City on the day of Pentecost.
Later, when the Apostles went out to preach the Gospel, Matthew was allotted the task of carrying the good news to Ethiopia, where he suffered martyrdom.
Ethiopian sources, such as the Synaxarium, make no mention of this, however; on the contrary, Ethiopians believe that they received Christianity without shedding apostolic blood.
Nevertheless, Christianity was certainly known in Ethiopia before the time of Frumentios, being the faith practiced by many of the merchants from the pagan Roman Empire settled in the Aksumite region to escape persecution.
In important cities, such as Axum and Adulis, these Christian merchants had their prayer houses and openly practiced their religion.
During roughly the same centuries that the Roman Empire flourished by the Mediterranean, East Africa and South Arabia were under the cultural and sometimes political domination of Axum City in what is now Tigre Province, Ethiopia.
The Axumite cultural sphere, which included the Biblical Sheba, had a large Jewish population including many local proselytes, and — as the story of Queen Kandake’s Eunuch (Acts 8:) suggests — Christianity was introduced to various Abyssinian communities at an early date by baptized African and Arabian Christian Israelite pilgrims of the old Diaspora [sometimes called “Christians of the Circumcision” in early Church literature, or else Christian Hebrews] returning from the Holy Land.
The earliest Axumite churches seem to have been completely unconnected culturally with those of the Hellenistic world. This is explainable by the fact that Christians were a marginalized and often persecuted faith in the Roman Empire, and that the churches were often clandestine “home churches” or else churches which met in out of the way places, such as caves or other insignificant structures.
The Church of Christ in the Roman Empire was finally given official recognition and status with Emperor Constantine’s Edict of Toleration in 312. Nicene Christianity was made the official state church of the Roman Empire by Emperor Theodosius I with his Edict of Thessalonia in AD 380.
Ethiopian tradition remembers these early Axumite churches as essentially Hebraic Christian church-synagogues. That these communities began instead to worship “in the Roman manner” (as Theodoret puts it) came about in the IV Century through “Abba Salama”, St. Frumentios of Tyre, who brought with him the Byzantine Egyptian Rite of Hellenic Alexandria.
The introduction of Christianity as the state religion of Ethiopia came about not as the result of organized evangelical activity from outside the country, but because ultimately it was the desire of the king.
The story of the conversation of the Axumites has come down to us in the work of the contemporary Church historian, Rufinus (d 410 A.D).

Life
Frumentius and his brother Edesius were young Phoenician [Hellenistic Syro-Phoenician Christian] boys from Tyre in Palestine.
In 316, accompanying their uncle Metropius on a trip to Abyssinia by ship, the crew was massacred in a port on the Red Sea and the boys taken as slaves to the King of Axum.
In time, Frumentius and Edesius gained favor with the king and his family.
Set free by the king as he died, the boys were asked by the widowed queen to help her educate her son the young prince, Erazanes, and assist in administration of the kingdom during his minority.
After they had agreed, Frumentius used their influence to spread the Christian faith in Abyssinia. Beginning by encouraging visiting Christian merchants to openly practice their faith in places of public worship, the brothers were able to bring some of the native Abyssinians to Christ.
When the young prince came of age, the brothers were released from their commitment.
Edesius returned to Tyre, but Frumentius stopped in Alexandria. Here he approached St. Archbishop Athanasius of Alexandria to send some clergy to Abyssinia.
With Frumentius’ experience and enthusiasm Abp. Athanasius found Frumentius the most suitable candidate, and he consecrated Frumentius bishop of the mission to Abyssinia.
The date of his consecration may have been in 328, but others consider the date to be between 340 and 346.
Frumentius returned to Abyssinia to establish his see in Axum. He baptized King Aeizanas, who had then succeeded to the throne.
Through the years Frumentius built many churches and received many people as the Christian faith spread throughout the country.
These Christians revered him, called him Abouna (Our Father) and Abba Slama (Father of Peace).
These titles are still used by the head of the Ethiopian Church. The people’s reverence for St. Frumentius was such that when, in 365, Emperor Constantius requested King Aeizanas to substitute the Arian bishop Theophilus for Frumentius, the request was in vain.
St. Frumentius reposed about 383.
