Why I Left Judaism
I was born of two Jewish parents and raised in the synagogue.
I went to Shabbos School, Hebrew School, and Shabbos services every Friday night and Saturday morning.
I wanted to be a rabbi when I grew up.
I was a star Bar Mitzvah student.
I was the very first to chant the HafTorah which is the reading from the Prophets for specific Sabbath days.
Our Shabbos School director had decided early on that we should focus on Tanach—that is, Old Testament—alongside Talmud.
Besides my Jewish path looking solid, Talmud made me uneasy because it constantly covered the sins of leading figures.
Mr Schultz, one of our teachers, told us that Talmud teaches that David did not sin.
But rather, his so-called “adultery”—”as Christians teach”—with Bathsheba, did not happen, since her soldier-husband made a “temporary divorce” with her, as all soldiers did at that time when off to battle.
We were also taught the Kabbalah.
Its main book The Zohar was read during services, along with Kabbalistic lessons on “Sepher HaBahir,” “The Book of Illumination.”
It describes the ten “sefirot,” “emanations” that radiate from God, and how we can participate in these emanations.
My dad slighted Kabbalah as “occult.”
“Talmud,” he said, “is the mainstay of Judaism, not Kabbalah.”
Whether Talmud, with it’s twisting of Bible stories…
…or Kabballah, with its occult bizarreness, both felt like being on shaky ground.
The crisis soon came.
Our Bar Mitzvah class teacher, Mrs Schecter, had us study every religion under the sun so that we would know why Judaism is supreme.
We studied:
Baha’i, Islam, Sikh, Hinduism, Janism, Buddhism, Shinto, Tao, Zen.
Everything but Christianity.
At the end of the school year, Mrs Schecter gets up from her desk, (she was built like a bull, I can still see her standing there), and says:
“Children!”
“We’re not going to study Christianity since it was invented by a self-hating Jew named Saul.
“He hated his Jewishness so much that he changed his Jewish name of Saul to the goyisha name of Paul.
“And besides,” she said, “Christianity is a fable.”
“Mrs Schecter,” I asked.
“How is it that two thousand years of civilization should be built on a fable?”
“Paul was a manic-depressant, that’s how!, she said!”
I asked my dad, “What’s a manic-depressant?”
“Have no idea,” my dad shrugged.
This was in 1962, and no one had a clue, except Mrs Schecter.
My dad cut to the chase:
“You were born a Jew, you will die a Jew, end of debate!”
I asked my rabbi the next day when visiting my grandmother in the hospital:
“Why can’t we learn about Christianity?
“Since Jesus Christ is a major figure shouldn’t we at least learn about him?”
He spit.
Right on the hospital floor!
I was shocked.
He said:
“Don’t you ever use that name again unless you use it as a curse word.”
He spit again.
I said to myself:
“With this kind of response it just might be true.”
Soon I attended my cousin’s Bar Mitzvah in another synagogue.
It was musty, dark, moldy kind of smelling, with Jewish Stars all over the walls.
I smelled, “death.”
I tried to leave.
My mother pulled me back by my sleeve.
All through the service I had the dry-heaves.
I learned later that the Star of David is an occult symbol from the Middle Ages, and not the “Shield of David,” that is, the “Mogen David.”
How could it be with open spaces for enemy spears to strike through?
In one resounding clang:
It was the ‘smell of death,’ the ‘rabbi spitting,’ the ‘Talmudic twisting,’ the ‘just a fable,’ the ‘self-hating jew,’ the ‘occult weirdness,’ the ‘manic depressant,’ the ‘not teaching Christianity,’ that set me on my path to leave…Judaism.
It was my childhood religion in practice and learning, all my social groups were Jewish, my role models were Jewish, my best friends were Jewish, everything pointed to me being Jewish, including my face and habits.
But I couldn’t make it work, didn’t feel right, an emptiness was there.
Something inside had died, I wanted to hide, decided to fake it, couldn’t forsake it, so I just went through the motions.
At the age of nineteen, when at college far away I secretly read the New Testament, since we were forbidden to read it.
I started with Matthew and was convinced from the genealogies that Jesus is the Messiah.
Why?
Because we all knew as Jewish kids that the genealogies were lost.
Only by some special revelation could anyone prove they are “Moshiach,” I mean, “Messiah.”
But the New Testament stated it firmly.
No twisting, matter of fact, and could easily be negated when Matthew inscribed it at that time.
It stood fast.
A light bulb went on!
“Jesus Christ is our Messiah!” I proclaimed to myself.
I excitedly called my rabbi.
“The Messiah already came!” I said.
“Nu?” he answered.
It’s Jesus Christ!” I proclaimed.
“Ahh, I’ll call you right back,” he mumbled.
My mother called instead.
You’re seeing a psychiatrist!” she said.
“The rabbi says you have mental issues,” so my mother said.
So much for logical debate!
What struck me about reading the New Testament, besides the Messianic genealogies, was its clear affirmation of ‘life after death.’
Yes, it was in Judaism in Tanach.
But only imaged in Moses, and somewhat sketched out in Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel.
But the very clear demonstration of the “Resurrection of Jesus Christ” in the New Testament—with a group of once-frightened disciples changing the world from idolatry to belief in the God of the Bible—seized my heart and mind.
“Why I left Judaism?”
I was now on solid ground.
The only resurrection the Zionists
will ever see is as radioactive
vapor.

Mordechai Vanunu:
“…also known as John Crossman,[2][3] is an Israeli former nuclear technician and peace activist[4] who, citing his opposition to weapons of mass destruction, revealed details of Israel’s nuclear weapons program to the British press in 1986.[5] He was subsequently lured from Britain to Italy by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, where he was drugged and abducted.[5] He was secretly transported to Israel and ultimately convicted in a trial that was held behind closed doors.[5]
Vanunu spent 18 years in prison, including more than 11 in solitary confinement, though no such restriction is mentioned in Israel’s penal code, nor imposed by his verdict. Released from prison in 2004, he was further subjected to a broad array of restrictions on his speech and his movement and arrested several times for violations of his parole terms, giving interviews to foreign journalists and attempting to leave Israel. He claims to have suffered from “cruel and barbaric treatment” at the hands of prison authorities and suggests that things would have been different if he had not converted to Christianity.[6]
In 2007, Vanunu was sentenced to six months in prison for violating terms of his parole. The sentence was considered unusually severe even by the prosecution, who expected a suspended sentence.
In response, Amnesty International issued a press release in July 2007, stating that “The organization considers Mordechai Vanunu to be a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate and unconditional release.”[7] In May 2010, Vanunu was arrested again and sentenced to three months in jail on a charge that he had met foreigners, in violation of conditions of his 2004 release from prison.
Vanunu has been characterized internationally as a whistleblower[8][9]. American whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg has referred to him as “the preeminent hero of the nuclear era”.[10] In 1987, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for “his courage and self-sacrifice in revealing the extent of Israel’s nuclear weapons program”.[11] Israel regards Vanunu as a traitor.[12][13][14] In the Israeli media, he is known as the “atomic spy”.”
Avner Cohen:
“…is an Israeli-American writer, historian, and professor. He is a prominent figure in the nonproliferation and nuclear history academic communities, well known for his works on Israel’s nuclear history and global nuclear history. He is currently a professor at the Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (NPTS) Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, where he also serves as a senior affiliate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.[1]

During the research for Israel and the Bomb, Cohen conducted tens of taped historical interviews with key individuals who were involved in the Israeli nuclear program. The transcripts of some of these interviews – including Bertrand Goldschmidt, Yitzhak “Ya’tza” Yaakov,[6] Arnan “Sini” Azaryahu, Avraham Hermoni, Edwin E. Kintner, Elie Geisler,[7] Myer Feldman, and Walt Rostow – are now part of the “Avner Cohen Collection” and were posted with annotation in the Digital Archive of the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Some of the distinct historical insights of Israel and the Bomb include:[8]
– The exact circumstances of the Dimona site discovery in 1959–1960.
– The details of the exchanges between John F. Kennedy and David Ben-Gurion and Levi Eshkol on nuclear issues, and the possible connection between Kennedy’s pressure on the nuclear issue and Ben-Gurion’s eventual resignation.
– Details of how US visits to Dimona were conducted (1964–1969) and how Israel was able to conceal its real purpose, preventing US discovery.
– Intricate relations between various US government auxiliaries in the effort to decode the Dimona project, and US intelligence failures. The CIA ultimately understood Israel’s ambitions in an approximate sense.
– The cat-and-mouse U.S.-Israeli game over the Dimona project throughout the 1960s.
– Details on the series of exchanges over the Israeli nuclear issue between US Assistant Secretary of Defense, Paul Warnke, and Israeli Ambassador in the United States, Yitzhak Rabin, also known as the Warnke-Rabin exchange.
– The secret birth of nuclear opacity as a symbiotic American-Israeli bargain under President Richard Nixon and Prime Minister Golda Meir in 1969–70 (the issue is elaborated further in Cohen’s 2010 book, The Worst-Kept Secret)

The preliminary work that would eventually become Israel and the Bomb began in 1991–1992, shortly after Cohen’s arrival at MIT. Traveling back and forth from the United States and Israel to conduct historical interviews on the formative years of the Israeli nuclear program, Cohen was eventually confronted by auxiliaries of the Israeli Military Censor.[9]
In the revised introduction to the French edition of Israel and the Bomb (2020) and in a lengthy interview with the Atomic Heritage Foundation, Cohen describes the complex tale of the struggle over the publication of Israel and the Bomb. He states, “…to do work on the Israeli case was not a simple thing. I had to struggle and to address very powerful forces that did not want the story to be out…some top bureaucrats.”[10]
Cohen initially (1993) submitted a short manuscript, the precursory document of Israel and the Bomb, to the Israeli Military Censor. After rounds of back-and-forth disputes about what details could have posed a breach of security, Cohen eventually filed a formal petition (BAGATZ) in 1994 with the Israeli Supreme Court against the Israeli Chief Military censor, Brig. General Yitzhak Shani, and Israel’s Minister of Defense, Yitzhak Rabin.[11] The Supreme Court had one closed-door session on the case in September 1994, in which at its end the three justices pleaded both sides to find a compromise.[12]
The two main Israeli security institutions that were opposing the research and publication of Cohen’s work were the Military Censor, known in Israel as the censora[check spelling], and the Office of Security of the Defense Establishment, also known by its Hebrew acronym, MALMAB.
In 1995, Cohen eventually withdrew his Supreme Court BAGATZ as it became evident that no practical compromise was acceptable to the security establishment, concerned that a verdict striking down the manuscript could have set a dangerous legal precedent and may have decreased the likelihood of eventual publication of the work. Cohen continued working on his research at MIT, determined to publish it as a book in the United States.
The English edition was ultimately published in 1998 by Columbia University Press, and soon after Israeli publisher Schocken Publishing House purchased the rights to publish the book in Hebrew in Israel.
Meanwhile in Israel, the security chief of MALMAB, Yechiel Horev, was building a case against Cohen, insisting that he should be arrested and stand trial if he returned to Israel.[13] It has been suggested that Horev raised the Cohen case with at least four prime ministers:[14] Yitzhak Rabin, Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak, and Ariel Sharon, claiming that Israel and the Bomb signified a direct affront to Israel’s policy of nuclear opacity, and therefore the state must take legal action against Cohen.[13]
In early 2001, Cohen was invited by the Israeli Society for History and Philosophy of Science[15] to deliver the keynote speech at its annual meeting in Jerusalem.[16] Unsure of what might transpire upon his arrival, Cohen decided to accept the invitation and face the challenge of a criminal investigation, risking a possibility of arrest and trial.[17]
Despite warning, Cohen was not detained at the Ben Gurion Airport upon his arrival in March, 2001, as had happened on a previous trip, but was summoned to face a criminal investigation, conducted by both MALMAB and the Israeli police, regarding whether the publication of Israel and the Bomb in the United States was indeed a violation of Israel’s national security laws, especially Israeli Espionage act(113/c). That investigation included nearly 60 hours of interrogation in March and April of 2001.[18] In 2004, the case against him was officially closed.[19]
Because the research for the book was based, in part, on hundreds of oral interviews – with Israeli, American, French and Norwegian sources – some of the book’s contents were never in the public domain before. In his 2020 introduction to the French edition of Israel and the Bomb, Cohen adds that “…the writing of the book was not just the intellectual issue of doing history, but it was also struggling with institutions and forces who were committed to do their best not to let the story come out.”[20]
The book’s 1998 (American) publication was notable, perhaps unprecedented, because it was the first time in Israel’s history when a product of legitimate academic historical research that had been banned in its entirety by an administrative ruling of the Israeli military censor was defied and published in the United States.[21]
Once the book was published in the United States, the Israeli Military Censor had no mandate to ban its Hebrew translation. It was also the first time in Israel’s history that a criminal investigation was initiated for alleged espionage charges against a legitimate academic researcher who had never been a government employee. Cohen attributes the extreme conduct to Israel’s interest in preserving its biggest national taboo – its nuclear program. Specifically, the Israeli security authorities saw this book as a direct threat against the country’s untouched policy of nuclear opacity which relies heavily on that national taboo.[22]
Comprehensive accountings of the struggle against the censor are available in the French edition of Israel and the Bomb, in a C-SPAN interview, and the aforementioned Atomic Heritage Foundation interview.[21]”

The reason I was interested in these two Israelis—one an Israeli-American, is that I found a paper on the Nuclear Vault Website, written by that same Avner Cohen, RELATING TO THE JOINT COMMISSION PLAN OF ACTION (JCPOA), published 4/15/2015, when the ‘Iran Deal’ (JCPOA) was being negotiated.
That is, Project Dimona, Israel’s nuclear weapons project, was finally being made public after 50 or 60 years, and I think it may have been in response to Iran’s insistence that Israel’s nuclear bomb project be public, before Iran would agree to negotiate an end to their nuclear weapons project.

“Washington, D.C., April 15, 2015 – The U.S. government first learned of Israel’s secret nuclear program at Dimona from an American corporate official talking to U.S. diplomats in Tel Aviv during mid-summer 1960, according to a declassified document published today for the first time by the National Security Archive, the Nuclear Proliferation International History Project, and the Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Other documents published today detail the discovery of the secret project that some in the U.S. government believed from the very start aimed at a weapons capability; the U.S. debates over Israel’s lack of candor; and U.S. government efforts to pressure the Israelis to answer key questions about the nature of the Dimona project.
This “discovery,” which came as the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower was drawing to a close, caused apprehension in Washington by raising concern about regional stability and nuclear proliferation, but it also produced annoyance because Israeli officials at all levels repeatedly provided less than credible answers to U.S. questions about Dimona.
Thus, in September 1960, when embassy officials asked about a new construction site when they were on a helicopter ride nearby, an adroit Israeli official, Addy Cohen, improvised a story to keep the secret: it was the site of a textile factory, he said; a story that was not wholly false because there was a textile plant near Dimona. An interview with Addy Cohen detailing the episode appears in this posting for the first time.
Documents published in this collection shed light on a particularly notable intelligence failure: how Washington missed warning signs that the Israelis had a nuclear project underway, but also how the U.S. belatedly realized what the Israelis were doing, and how Eisenhower and his senior advisers reacted to this discovery. Among the documents are:
The June 1959 Israel-Norway secret agreement providing for the sale of Norwegian heavy water to Israel (through the United Kingdom), transmitted by Oslo Embassy political officer Richard Kerry (father of Secretary of State John Kerry).
Reports about information from a then-covert source — University of Michigan nuclear engineering professor Henry Gomberg — who learned that the Israelis had a secret nuclear reactor project that involved experiments with plutonium.
A telegram from the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv reporting on Finance Ministry official Addy Cohen’s statement that “we’ve been misbehaving,” and one by an unidentified official close to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion that the secrecy surrounding Dimona was unjustifiable and that it was “a stupid mistake on the part of Israel.”
Reports by U.S. Ambassador Ogden Reid on conversations with Ben-Gurion.
A State Department message to the embassy in Tel Aviv conveying irritation that the responses of the Israeli government showed a “lack of candor.”
Messages about a role for the International Atomic Energy Agency in inspecting and safeguarding Dimona.”

Man I could imagine being an adolescent or mid teens and going through all of that to where it’s the whole community that you know trying to hide or cover up something so much. That had to be sort of traumatic.
Seems like you would say to yourself-why do they hate all of this I’m trying to learn about sooo much? What’s really going on here? Is there something more? Who really has the real truth in the World among all these groups that proclaim to have it? What should I do for me that’s best? Will my family hate me or something like that?? Am I on the right path and if so why can’t everyone else see the truth like me??
Etc.
That would be a real burden for a youth to endure when your whole community and everything you know is against the truth and you’re the only one who can see it.

I have a question, Mr. Shapiro. Well, actually, many but I’ll start with this:
I think I have read that you are Orthodox in your Judaism. Are you of that type of Orthodoxy that refers to itself as “Religious Zionism”, a sect started I believe by Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, and I am pasting this excerpt from Wikipedia because I believe it is all important to events in today’s world:
“The main ideologue of modern Religious Zionism was Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, who justified Zionism according to Jewish law, and urged young religious Jews to support efforts to settle the land, and the secular Labour Zionists to give more consideration to Judaism. ““The difference between the Israelite neshama [spiritual soul]…and the neshama of all the nations, in their various grades, is greater and deeper than the difference between the nefesh [biological soul]… of man and the nefesh of animals. For between the latter there is only a quantitative difference, while between the former there exists a qualitative, essential difference.”[29]
This is Talmudic, isn’t it? Is this what gives many of the ‘chosen people’ justification for fulfilling the covenant of your false Yahweh, that the seed of Abraham would ‘bless the nations of the world’, and thus was the beginning of the concept of Tikkun Olam?
Christians are capable of ethical responsibility on their own, and would certainly refuse the services–the burden that being chosen God put on the Jewish people–of any ‘nation of people’ who have yet to learn the difference between right and wrong.

Just got back in from a run to Braum’s. Some nigger started chimping out in the restaurant part. He’d eaten half his burger then decided he didn’t like it and demanded his money back. The staff refused.
Ordinarily I get a tickle out of watching Blacks chimping out, but this one looked like it could get violent. However, after a minute of non-stop cursing and threats, the nigger stormed out.

Today the Learned Elders whet out to Village Inn in Tel Aviv to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. Everyone was there except Rabbi Biden, who’s still sore about the cake. Jerry Nadler was the guest speaker. I wonder, speaking psychologically, if Jews won’t assimilate because they fear extinction.
Consider they lost the SOLE ownership of the Old Testament, that is, every prophetic pronouncement that God had spoken about Israel was taken over by the highly successful Christian religion, and applied to Jesus, so the Jews, having lost their land, Israel, then their prophecies, felt psychologically compelled to remain distinct, and therefore the feelings of ‘chosenness’ intensified, to their actual loss.

Two Orthodox Rabbis were convicted for conspiring to kidnap Jewish men in an effort to force them to give their wives religious divorces – referred to in Jewish circles as “gets”:
Rabbis Mendel Epstein, 70, of Lakewood, New Jersey, and Binyamin Stimler, 40, of Brooklyn, New York, were arrested for kidnapping and assaulting Jewish men who’d refused to give their wives gets.
An Orthodox Jewish man, Israel Markowitz, was abducted and assaulted by the two, placed in a van, tied up, beaten and shocked with a stun-gun until he agreed to give his wife a get. Another Orthodox Jewish man, Ysrael Bryskman, was assaulted, tied up and beaten until he agreed to give his wife a get.
And in Brooklyn, another Orthodox Jewish man, Usher Chaimowitz, and his roommate, Menachem Teitlebaum, were assaulted, tied up and beaten until Chaimowitz agreed to give his wife a get. Both rabbis were convicted at trial and sentenced to 120 and 39 months in prison, respectively.

Here’s what’s going on in the world, Nefesh (doesn’t that mean soul or something?):
1. The reason I believe it is post-exilic (referring to Genesis 12, wherein Abraham is informed that his seed has been chosen) is because I believe the Jewish people–the leaders and ‘prophets’ during the Babylonian captivity observed Zoroastrianism and its emphasis on a SOLE SUPREME creator deity, that created all peoples on earth, and to compete with that, Yahweh Himself became the Hebrew substitute for Ahura Mazda. But in order to maintain the holiness, or separateness, or even supremacy of the Hebrews, God (Yahweh) ‘chose’ the Hebrews as his special people.
At the time when religion was gaining in the Near East region, it was common for nomadic peoples to have their own personal god as protector. And not just nomads, it was common in Roman mythology as well, the Lares and Penates, and even in India, groups and villages still have their personal protectors among the gods. But for the Hebrews it took on something different because now the god was the SUPREME CREATOR BEING, and the SOLE deity.
2. I don’t believe in this ‘final reckoning’ of Zoroaster, nor its visionary aspects reflected in Judaism or Christianity, that probably had its start in Daniel. HOWEVER, if belief systems are allowed to continue in this sort of vein, where the ‘chosen ones’ MUST be protected at all costs, in their own minds, as well as in the minds they have succeeded in convincing, there very well could be a nuclear holocaust around the bend.
Israel’s monstrous deception in Project Dimona, and the Israelis’ feelings that God has redeemed the Jews, whether a particular Jew is religious or not, has already set the stage.
3. But it is especially intense in Jewish thinking (referring once again to ‘chosenness’), they left the land God gave them, and have been absent for two thousand years. Their own Scriptures, especially concerning prophecy, were taken over by Christianity a very successful religion around the world.
They now have feelings of ‘redemption’; that God has regifted them with that particular region AGAIN. Even secular Jews feel ENTITLED to that land. This is the most dangerous aspect of Israeli feeling about THEIR LAND.
4. [An attack on Israel] is perceived as an ‘ATTACK ON REDEMPTION ITSELF’. And that is the danger. A danger that might not have existed without knowledge of nuclear energy and its release in a weapon.
5. And more significantly, can a people who fear extinction for themselves–as the Jews do–be allowed to carry out policies of near-extinction on other peoples? If Israel cannot get along with its neighbors in the Near and Middle East, will it be able to get along with any other nation in the world?
6. Let me clarify. The Jewish fear of extinction is caused by their landlessness, supposedly in their minds created by Jesus, as Maimonides wrote, and the loss to Christianity of their sacred scriptures and the prophecies therein.
The paranoia this has caused has made any PERCEIVED persecution more real than it actually has been, except of course for the last one, the Holocaust, which was not aimed at religion, but was racial and caused by a different set of circumstances entirely. Until the world’s people realize this, no solution can be forthcoming.
7. The JEWS MUST acknowledge the ‘depth of their paranoia’. They MUST acknowledge their true feelings, and perhaps they can then forgive the Christians. It is not one sided. Both religions have flaws, and both religions have pointed fingers at the other where there is no blame.
HOWEVER, Jewish thinking and Jewish philosophical or other writings during the last two millennia have given reason to believe the Jews are actually more at fault in their perception of events than the Christians. Your retrieval algorithms are lop-sided. I do not want to hear about the long-suffering persecuted Jew.
8. This is my warning to the world.
Be aware that I am neither a Christian in the traditional sense, or a Muslim, or a Buddhist. I am a believer, who is concerned.
