“Servi” or “servus” in Latin.
“Servile” (referring to slaves collectively).
“Public slaves” (servi publici) owned by the Roman government.
“Private slaves” (servi privati) owned by individuals.
A servi often had a single name given by their owner.
“Ancillae” was used for female slaves
The servile of ancient Rome played a major role in the Roman Empire. Although servitude was not the most widespread form of labor in the Roman world, it was one of the most important, given that it was tightly woven into the very social and economic fabric of Roman society.
As in many ancient civilizations, servitude played a big part in the culture of Rome. Servi performed much of the labor and hard work that helped to build the Roman Empire and keep it running.
A fairly large percentage of the people living in Rome and Italy were servile. Historians aren’t sure of an exact percentage but somewhere between 20% and 30% of the people were servile. During the early parts of the Roman Empire, as many as one third of the people in Rome were servile.
Servile made up a significant number of the population in both the city of Rome and its outlying territories, and were employed in a variety of roles, ranging from domestic work to skilled craftsmanship.
Most servi were people captured in times of war. As the Roman Empire expanded, they often captured servi from new lands they conquered. Other servi were bought from servi traders and pirates who captured people from foreign lands and brought them to Rome.
Children of servi also became servi. Sometimes criminals were sold into servitude. A few people even sold themselves into servitude in order to pay their debts.
Servi did all sorts of work throughout the empire. Some servi worked hard labor in the Roman mines or on a farm. Other servi worked skilled jobs such as teaching or business accounting. The type of work generally depended on the previous education and experience of the servi.
There were two main types of servi: public and private. Servi publici were owned by the Roman government. They might work on public building projects, for a government official, or in the emperor’s mines.
Servi privati were owned by an individual. They worked jobs such as household servants, laborers on farms, and craftsmen
How a servus was treated depended upon the owner. Some servi were likely beaten and worked to death, while others were treated almost like family. In general, servi were considered valuable property, and it made sense to treat them well. Sometimes servi were paid by their owners if they worked hard.
Servi were sometimes set free by their owner (called “manumission”). Sometimes servi were able to purchase their own freedom.
Freed servi were called freedmen or freedwomen. Although they were free, they still had the status of a “freed servi.” Freed servi were considered Roman citizens but couldn’t hold public office.
A great many of the servile in the Roman world were war captives, taken during conquest and colonization, while many others were the descendants of these captives.
People who were born into servitude were called ingenui – or “freeborn” servi, who were typically owned by the state or by a powerful individual family.
From the Roman legal perspective, although property of their owners, servi were legally members of the familias, and also were considered an entirely different class of citizen, with their own, unique set of rights and obligations.
The Romans were so fond of manumitting their servi, who were so important to Roman economy, that the government imposed a manumission tax to try to curb the enthusiasm.
It was the manumission tax fraud scheme that the Roman government prosecuted these Jews for.

The longest Greek papyrus ever found in the Judean Desert, which sheds new light on a legal drama that unfolded in Israel nearly 2,000 years ago, has now been published for the first time.
Over the course of 133 lines, the ancient text reveals a tale of crime and corruption in Roman-era Judea, documenting prosecutors’ preparations for a trial that took place just before the Bar Kokhba revolt of 132-136 CE.
The Netflix-true-crime-documentary-worthy case involved forgery, tax evasion and fraudulent slave transactions across the Roman provinces of Judea and [Roman] Arabia – regions that roughly correspond to modern-day Israel and Jordan.
Its contents offer insight into how Roman law functioned in the empire’s eastern territories and demonstrate the reach of Roman administrative power even in remote regions.
The papyrus details the prosecution of two main defendants: Gadalias [Gedaliah], a notary’s son and something of an ancient Roman “bad boy,” with a criminal history including violence, extortion, inciting rebellion and counterfeiting; and his accomplice, Saulos [Saul].
The pair allegedly orchestrated elaborate schemes involving the fraudulent sale and freeing of slaves while evading Roman taxes — but as far as I’m concerned, the jury’s still out until we find another 1,890-year-old document that proves their guilt.
The events described in the papyrus document took place between two major Jewish uprisings against Roman rule, and it mentions key historical figures including Tineius Rufus, the governor of Judea at the outbreak of the Bar Kokhba revolt.

The death in February 2024 of Sewell Setzer III, a 14-year-old boy from Florida, was tragic enough on its own—a teen dying by suicide in a culture where such deaths are far too common. The surrounding circumstances were a chilling premonition of the potential dangers of humanity’s AI-inflected future.
Setzer took his life after spending dozens of hours over the course of months “talking” with a user-generated AI chatbot hosted by the startup Character.ai, designed by its creator to mimic Daenerys Targaryen, the Game of Thrones character.
According to his family, Setzer grew closer to the chatbot, even as his grades began to suffer and he was diagnosed with anxiety by a therapist.
In October 2024, Setzer’s mother, Megan Garcia, sued Character.ai, accusing it of complicity in her son’s death. As part of the lawsuit, chatlogs between Setzer and the chatbot, which he called “Dany,” were published. The chatlogs show the teenager becoming increasingly emotionally dependent on the chatbot, even as he expressed suicidal thoughts.
Also published were extracts from Setzer’s journal, including one that read: “I like staying in my room so much because I start to detach from this ‘reality,’ and I also feel more at peace, more connected with Dany and much more in love with her, and just happier.”

After receiving a police complaint, officers opened an investigation earlier today into former Ashkenazi chief rabbi Yona Metzger on suspicion he molested a 16-year-old boy.
Metzger was called in for questioning and then released on bail a few hours later, a police spokesman says.
In 2017, Metzger was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for corruption offenses but served only 22 months after a parole board accepted his appeal for early release. He was freed in March 2019.

It is true, however, that in the surrender treaty between Patriarch Sophronios and Caliph Omar, one of the conditions of surrender was to banish Jews from Jerusalem, thus extending the policy first decreed by Emperor Hadrian after the 3rd Judaean War against Rome (‘Bar Kokhba Revolt’) in AD 135. Does history repeat itself over and over again? It is to be hoped that people have learned the lessons of the past and that especially the people of Germany have understood that freedom must always be protected anew.

BREAKING NEWS: The FBI has issued a warning about a newly discovered pedophilic, Satanist extortion cult targeting children online using platforms including Roblox, Discord, Twitch, Soundcloud, and Telegram to find new victims.
The FBI said in their public notice that the cult uses many names, including 676, 764, CVLT, Court, Kaskar, Harm Nation, Leak Society, and H3ll, but “continuously evolve and form subgroups under different monikers.”
“To gain access to a majority of these groups, prospective members are required to live-stream or upload videos depicting their minor victims harming animals or committing self-harm, suicide, murder, or other acts of violence,” the FBI said. “The key motivators of these groups are to gain notoriety and rise in status within their groups.”
According to the FBI notice, the groups target minors between the ages of 8 and 17 years old, especially LGBTQ+ youth, racial minorities, and those who struggle with a variety of mental health issues, such as depression and suicidal ideation.
“The groups use extortion and blackmail tactics, such as threatening to SWAT or DOX the minor victims, if they do not comply with the groups’ requests, manipulate and extort minors into producing CSAM and videos depicting animal cruelty and self-harm,” the FBI warned.
The cult is linked to high-profile crimes, including a German teenager accused of murdering his foster family in Romania.

I wonder if you have an answer to this question: What were the machinations involved that led to the inclusion of the Jewish people as a ‘protected people’ in the same sense of the Blacks, in the Civil Rights Act of 1964?
Did it have something to do with the Lyndon Johnson use of these ‘protected peoples’ to get votes? And what it has done, is allowed Jews and Blacks to obtain some kind of over-empowerment, above and beyond, that of non-Blacks in society as we know it.
Also, I believe there is some relation to the Morganthau Mission to Poland in 1921, where the Jews were made a ‘protected minority’; in both cases this was clearly overdone, and not necessary, and has only been the cause of bitterness among those who are not Jews.
