Steam-powered mining drill used for drilling holes in rock for explosives, invented about 1812, using boiler-driven technology, something like a steam locomotive, to drive the drill bit.
Doc Watson’s song (adding the last name of Brown) is one take of many on semi-legendary ‘steel-driving’ American Folk Hero ‘John Henry’. Poached from Wikipedia:

Then the shaker would begin rocking and rolling: wiggling and rotating the drill to optimize its bite.
The steam drill machine could drill but it could not shake the chippings away, so its bit could not drill further and frequently broke down.

Vince introduces the magnificent, but little-known, long-forgotten piece of American heritage, the 19th century National Monument to the Forefathers in his podcast about the Christian moral foundations of America.
I’ve studied my ancestral Puritan & Patriotic roots and historical Americana, but I’ve never heard of this amazing monument. My Puritian ancestors arrived in the 1620s, but they didn’t make passage from England to the Colonies in the Mayflower, but another ship.
The Pilgrims were, in fact, a radical sectarian branch of Anglicanism, while my Puritan East Anglian ancestors did manage to remain in communion with the Church of England while dissenting from the monarchial government, but the Protestant Anglican Christian worldview as to the necessity of faith and morality as foundational to a culture society was entirely held in common.
Vince wrote about the Monument in his Substack piece with photos, and then lists a number of action plans for restoring morality to America:

Republican House members suggest laws sending campus protesters to Gaza

A group of House Republicans led by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced a pair of bills Wednesday that would send anti-Israel protesters and others to Gaza or cancel visas if they are convicted of a crime on a college campus.
The Study Abroad Act will cancel visas for those who have been arrested “for rioting or unlawful protest” or for establishing, participating, or promoting an encampment on college campuses since Oct. 7, 2023 — the date of Hamas’s invasion of Israel.
“It’s time to send a clear message to foreign, Hamas-sympathizing students rioting: if you bring chaos to our universities, you can study abroad somewhere else,” Ogles told the Daily Caller. “Might I recommend Iran, Qatar, or Gaza? They seem more your speed,” Ogles added.
The second bill, the Antisemitism Community Service Act, is much more broad.
That bill would send anyone who has committed a crime on a college campus since Oct. 7, 2023, to Gaza to perform six months of community service. The bill’s current wording would include those who have committed crimes unrelated to recent anti-Israel protests.
“If you support a terrorist organization, and you participate in unlawful activity on campuses, you should get a taste of your own medicine,” Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX), who introduced the bill alongside Ogles and Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC), said to Fox News Digital. “I am going to bet that these pro-Hamas supporters wouldn’t last a day, but let’s give them the opportunity.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to Ogles for comment.
Both bills will likely face an uphill climb to pass the House and would be much less likely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Ireland snubs Israel, makes announcement in UN to recognise State of Palestine

Ireland on Friday snubbed Israel and made a huge announcement at the UN on recognizing Palestine as an independent State.
This was announced by the Ireland ambassador to the UN after the global body overwhelmingly voted in favour of a full membership of Palestine.
The assembly adopted a resolution on Friday with 143 votes in favour and nine against – including the US and Israel – while 25 countries abstained. It does not give the Palestinians full UN membership, but simply recognises them as qualified to join.
According to Al Jazeera news, while the UNGA alone cannot grant full UN membership, the draft resolution on Friday will give the Palestinians some additional rights and privileges from September 2024 – like a seat among the UN members in the assembly hall – but it will not be granted a vote in the body.

In a speech that one journalist described as “unhinged,” Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Gilad Erdan described Palestinians as “modern-day Nazis” and condemned the U.N. General Assembly for choosing to “reward” them with “rights and privileges.”
“You are shredding the U.N. Charter with your own hands,” Erdan said as he fed a small copy of the document through a miniature paper shredder. “Shame on you.”

My sister, now retired, had an interesting experience back in the early 90’s.
She was a programmer for a company that made fuel injectors for Pratt and Whitney jet engines.
The company had been bought by some Israeli group not long before the following incident:
When her boss, the Senior Systems Analyst retired, rather than promote from within, they brought in some new grad with a masters in IT from Columbia University. Of course he was jewish.

Historically, Jews were oppressed by Europeans into being forced to lend money and become wealthy. Therefore, dumb peasants blamed them when thing went wrong in society. Here is some keyboard generalship.
In the movie “Lawrence of Arabia,” Peter O’Toole is depicted sitting out in the desert trying to figure out how to conquer the port of Aqaba that the Turks have conquered and are defending with artillery.
He comes to the conclusion that the port should be attacked from the land because the Turkish artillery pieces are fixed and can only point to sea. But first he has the logistical problem of crossing the Nefud Desert and a deadly natural oven called “the Sun’s Anvil.”
His war cry becomes “Aqaba from the land” and his plan is successful.
Currently 600,000 to a million Arab fighters are stewing in their juices and chomping at the bit for the simply chance to kill jews.
The problem is they have is to cross Saudi Arabia and Jordan in a straight line to get to Israel. Neither nation is sympathetic to the Houthis.
But there is another way. By travelling on the sea they can reach Iraq where they have sympathetic contacts and then Syria where they also have allies.
They must overcome the logistical problem of of moving troops and equipment by sea and once that is done the war cry of “Haifa from the land” becomes quite feasible.
The fact is, Houthis have unwittingly already solved this problem by capturing a huge jewish-owned ship that carried 5,000 cars and they can capture even more ships. A ship that carries 5,000 cars can carry a lot of troops.
And it is a lot easier to sail from Yemen to Iraq on captured ships than it is to cross the Nefud Desert on a camel.
“Haifa (and why not Tel Aviv too) from the land!” is now quite feasible.
As a pointing Peter O`Toole said in his role as Lawrence of Arabia, “Its just a matter of going there.”

I also play guitar. My first teacher is your age and is a phenomenal musician that can play the most technical stuff right back too you off the audio through his fretboard and amp by ear like Joe Pass (my favorite jazz guitarist besides Grant Green and Wes Montgomery).
He can play all the rock complex shredder stuff like Joe Satriani, is a jazz composer on his keyboard and piano. My first teacher loves jazz and blues and introduced me to the genres during lessons and I’m still an addict. He calls them ‘musician’s music’ and IMO that is spot on as lots of musicians get inspiration and ideas from those genres, and plays like 8 other instruments harp, harmonica, banjo, drums, bass, etc. so I know musicians back then were better.

An Israeli engineering unit responsible for demolishing “thousands” of buildings in Gaza became “addicted” to explosions and was motivated by revenge, an investigation by open source intelligence group Bellingcat and US news channel Scripps has found.
Soldiers identified as part of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Battalion 8219, tasked with carrying out demolitions, posted accounts of their work on social media – in common with other Israeli units – including footage that went viral of soldiers smoking as they detonated apartment blocks behind them.
Bellingcat used open sources to track the unit and the trail of destruction it left as 8219 moved through Gaza during the war from Gaza City in the north to Khan Yunis in the south, destroying residential buildings and mosques.
An unnamed user identified as a captain in the unit posted that it had destroyed “thousands” of buildings and that a battalion commander had said their work had “no precedent … in all the years of the IDF”.
The poster separately wrote: “We have become addicted to explosions.”
Battalion 8219 member Yonatan Segal told Scripps that soldiers were partly motivated by revenge after the deadly Hamas raids of 7 October. “Revenge in terms of teaching them a lesson, so to speak, so that they would never do that again,” he said.
The unit was part of an ongoing effort to clear a “buffer zone” around the perimeter of Gaza, open source researchers found, a practice that international law scholars say may constitute a war crime if it is indiscriminate. Twenty-one Israeli soldiers were killed carrying out demolitions in the zone in January.
About half of all of the buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed by Israeli bombardment during the war, according to analyses of satellite imagery.
Balakrishnan Rajagopal, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, described destruction on this scale as “domicide” and argued it should be a crime “enshrined in international humanitarian and criminal law”.
A spokesperson for the IDF said the military was looking into the report and whether the practices described and recorded by the soldiers had broken rules.
“We are still gathering the information and working on a thorough response,” the spokesperson said.
Nick Waters, a Bellingcat investigator who researched Battalion 8219, said the unit’s apparent excesses were likely to be the tip of the iceberg.
“My main takeaway is that actually this isn’t that unique,” he said. “The article doesn’t show the totality of the buildings destroyed by 8219, and 8219 are simply one battalion among several who’ve carried out this kind of work inside Gaza, including in the ‘buffer zone’ area, which stretches along the border.

The Gaza Resistance has neither “regrouped” or became “resurgent” per Israhell’s propaganda. In other words, the Al Qassam paramilitary coalition with 10 or 12 more Palestinian militant groups besides itself remains a fully intact fighting force, which has certainly suffered an unknown percentage of fighter losses, but not enough to cripple it.
“Resurgent”. IOF thinks it did a beat down of Al Qassam, but that’s a lie. Resistance moves freely about Gaza through the tunnels and maneuvering through the rubble surveilling IOF and tactically planning their ambushes & attacks well in advance (getting more sophisticated all of the time), still choosing best weapons for the operation which indicates there is plenty of weapons and manufacturing capacity.
Resistance also fights strategically–for example, when opportunity presents itself, snipers will target the IOF elite units and officers and take them out for attrition and degradation of the IOF, and leave the more hapless reservists to fend for themselves, who usually scatter like a covey of quail when their officer goes down. Immediately after an operation is finished, Resistance doesn’t stick around to appreciate their handiwork, but they vanish like smoke, and blow the escape tunnels behind them.
In the meantime, the diaper-wearing IOF Jews refuse to go down into the tunnels and fight the Resistance there, thanks to previous nasty surprises that Resistance treated them to, and prefer to ransack, loot, and do controlled demolition of residential complexes and civilian infrastructure, with or without inhabitants.
The way I understand it, the Resistance tunnels are structured of three kinds: attack tunnels, defense tunnels, and main underground command & control network, military industrial infrastructure, and logistical tunnels.

American Army officer Maj. Harrison Mann has resigned in protest over the United States’ support for Israel, which he said had “enabled and empowered” the killing of Palestinian civilians.
“While assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency, I was enabling policies that violated my conscience,” said Maj. Harrison Mann.
The officer, Maj. Harrison Mann, announced his resignation and explained his reasons for leaving the service in a post on the social media site LinkedIn on Monday.
According to his biography on the site, he has specialized in the Middle East and Africa for about half of his 13-year career and previously served at the U.S. Embassy in Tunis.
“The policy that has never been far from my mind for the past six months is the nearly unqualified support for the government of Israel, which has enabled and empowered the killing and starvation of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians,” wrote Major Mann in the post, which noted that he had previously emailed his comments to co-workers on April 16.
“This unconditional support also encourages reckless escalation that risks wider war.”
“I told myself my individual contribution was minimal, and that if I didn’t do my job, someone else would, so why cause a stir for nothing?” he wrote.
“At some point — whatever the justification — you’re either advancing a policy that enables the mass starvation of children, or you’re not,”

The War on George Street – Resistance Roundup – Day 220

The Palestinian Resistance continued what could be considered a counteroffensive against Israeli soldiers in various parts of the Gaza Strip.
The Resistance has succeeded in reorganizing its forces in northern Gaza, and it’s now repelling Israeli attacks at several fronts, including the Jabaliya and Zaytoun axes.
Meanwhile the battle in Rafah is intensifying, as Palestinian Resistance is targeting invading troops in the east Rafah region along with the Rafah Crossing.
In today’s operations, the Resistance employed various types of tactics including complex operations conducted jointly between various groups, dropping bombs from drones, and using Yassin-105 shells, among other tactics.
A recurring theme in the Resistance statements received by the Palestine Chronicle was the fighting on George Street in eastern Rafah, where the heaviest of clashes are currently taking place.
Below are the latest statements by the two main Resistance forces in Gaza, and the Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah.
